give IT. get IT. was founded as a 501(C)3 nonprofit organization for the purpose of increasing technology access and literacy by five Maine residents in 2002. This effort was originally named the ‘PCs for MAINE’ program and since its inception, it has provided training, low-cost, high-quality computers and free technical support to thousands of people throughout Maine and Northern New England.
More than 130 businesses, small and large, donate computers and use our recycling program. This provides us with thousands of computers and all the parts needed to make them whole for the organizations and people we support. Microsoft provides us with discounted charitable software which helps keep costs down and build computers that are more reliable and will last longer than most new store-bought systems – for a fraction of the cost.
These technology donors also want to make sure any technology that is found to be unusable in our process is managed properly and will not negatively impact the environment, their customer data, or their brand. Therefore, we built a best-practices-certified, electronics reuse and recycling system – the only third-party certified service of its kind in New England – to take all the electronics a business no longer needs and properly manage all of it.
In December 2018, this special recycling program (previously named eWaste Alternatives) was combined with PCs for MAINE to create the new all-in-one entity now named ‘give IT. get IT’. ‘give IT’ is focused on our best- practices electronics recycling program, project sponsors and volunteers, while ‘get IT’ is about how we ‘get’ our powerful alternative source of computers, training, and support to people and organizations who need IT.
While providing these ongoing services throughout many diverse communities, we also work to develop the tech-savvy workforce of today. Many of our current and past employees started as volunteers from Maine’s Community College and Technical College systems and Department of Labors’ Vocational Rehabilitation Services and Career Center divisions. These candidates work in our customer support and production environments with mentoring from our professional staff and get opportunities to explore the diverse field of Information Technology, discover their strengths, build on weaknesses and generate a credible employment portfolio.
