Conventional electronics recycling focuses on the destruction of those devices for scrap metal value and landfill disposal of the remaining waste. Our interest in reusing as much of this material as possible also required recycling - not landfilling - the remaining e waste. We could not find a recycler that would ensure this material was being handled properly, so in 2006, we built our own electronics recycling center.
In 2006, our new electronics reuse and recycling system was Maine’s first operating, DEP licensed facility and in 2015 it was certified to the R2 International Best Practices Standard for data security, compliance, quality, environmental impact, health and safety in electronics reuse and recycling. To this day, it is the only certified program in Maine and the only nonprofit program with this credential throughout all of New England.
In addition to its very high security and environmental standards, the program adds substantial community value. We employ people with disabilities and technology learners and focus our reuse efforts on serving other nonprofits, individuals, and families who need technology access and skills to achieve important personal, literacy, educational, and employment goals. We do this by providing access to a low and often no-cost alternative source of personal computers, training, and support.
Corporations and agencies are required to recycle their surplus unwanted electronics by law - landfill disposal is illegal in the US. We offer a better option to destructive scrap recycling - Reuse - by diverting as much of this material to community benefit as possible while properly managing the remaining data and waste - all at a cost comparable to conventional scrap recycling services.
Most IT-related devices - reusable or not - have enough scrap value to sustain our cost to process them and anything we can reuse is processed for free. The optional services we provide such as on-site collection, physical drive, media destruction, and recycling of non-reusable consumer electronics such as AV equipment, copiers, and peripherals involve a processing fee. The more reusable your surplus/unwanted tech is, the lower your cost to remove them will be, Highly reusable loads of material are processed for free.
Provided by our staff throughout New England and New York; National Service by vetted third-party vendors. Material is secured in our GPS tracked trucks until they reach our facility.
Asset tags, device type, make, model, serials, disposition (reuse/recycle) and fees when they apply - including hard disk drives. It also includes a services summary (waste management, data security, and asset recovery) if you want to apply fees or charitable reuse values to different departments in your organization. EPA RCRA coded compliance report is also included.
To achieve absolute security, materials accountability, and transparency, we have developed an extensive recording and control process. Our trucks are GPS monitored, the facility has 360-degree surveillance and security monitoring. Our workflows were designed around a ‘secure chain of custody’ operations model where materials remain in our possession from the point of collection (your facility) all the way through documentation, security screening, reuse, and de-manufacturing.
Fully permitted and licensed with the fed and state - we are also committed to total data security, zero landfill of electronics, health and safety, environmental impact reduction, continual improvement and transparency. We reuse everything we can for our mission and properly recycle all the remaining electronic waste.
