Learn IT | Computer Screen Cleaning Tips

Even during the course of minimal daily use, a computer screen is a dust magnet. Add in the additional threats from morning coffee, working lunches and the curious hands of little co-workers and we’ve seen some pretty nasty screens in our day. Since most of our clients are students who need to take their computers everywhere from the classroom to the laundromat, laptops are their machine of choice which are at risk for even more damage.

Whether you own a laptop or a desktop computer, most dust accumulations, smudges and finger prints can be wiped away with minimal pressure from a simple scratch-free and lint-free rag (no paper towels, please, they can be abrasive). When that doesn’t work, it’s time to break out a little homemade cleaning solution comprised of a 50/50 mix of water and rubbing alcohol.

Here are some important things to keep in mind when cleaning ANY computer screen:

  • Make sure your computer is off and unplugged before applying any cleaning solution.
  • Always apply the cleaning solution to the lint-free cloth either by spraying the cloth or dipping the cloth in the solution. Don’t ever spray it directly on the screen.
  • Alternate moving the cloth left to right as well as up and down using minimal pressure. Don’t move the cloth in a circular motion as you may create a hazy spot on your screen
  • Use a second lint-free cloth to dry your screen
  • Make sure your screen is completely dry before turning your screen back on

That’s IT! Like any piece of mechanical equipment, keeping your computer clean is one of the easiest and most effective ways to extend its life. For more helpful advice, be sure to like us on Facebook!
