To help close the digital divide in Maine, the Maine Connectivity Authority has launched the Maine Tech Share program, a statewide initiative to provide refurbished digital devices to veterans, students, older adults, and low-income households. In partnership with Waterville-based nonprofit give IT. get IT., the program aims to source and distribute 25,000 tablets, laptops, and phones over the next few years.

This effort is a key part of Maine’s 2024 Digital Equity Plan, which identifies access to reliable, affordable devices as essential to meaningful internet use. give IT. get IT., a licensed electronics recycler, has already provided over 20,000 refurbished computers across Maine since 2002, thanks to business partners who donate equipment for secure data destruction and responsible reuse. Co-founder Chris Martin calls the process “a win for our partners, the environment and our community.”

The Maine Connectivity Authority has already facilitated broadband connections for 86,000 homes and businesses—now, through Maine Tech Share, they’re ensuring more people have the tools to benefit from those connections.
