At Southern Maine Community College (SMCC), access to technology has been a transformative force for nontraditional and low-income students striving to succeed in their academic and employment journeys. Thanks to the Opportunity Clicks Grant and community partnerships, over 70 students now have access to high-quality laptops and support—an invaluable resource in a time when digital access is critical.
Ellen Culberson, Director of Social Services at SMCC’s Advocacy Resource Center (ARC), describes the partnership as nothing short of life-changing. “During a time of scant community resources, having access to quality laptops has been wildly impactful for our students. On the social service staff side of the work, you have made our jobs fun!”
Beyond the anecdotal success stories, data supports the profound impact of this initiative.
An internal survey by ARC captured students’ voices who received laptops through this program.
The results highlight the significant role technology plays in their education:
The overwhelmingly positive feedback from SMCC students underscores the importance of continued investment in digital access programs. Ellen and her team at ARC are eager to explore opportunities to extend this partnership beyond the grant period, ensuring that future students continue to benefit from reliable technology.
“We could not be more grateful for the stellar service you have provided to our students,” Ellen shared. “If extending our partnership beyond the culmination of this grant program is possible, I’d love to put our heads together to make it happen.”
As we reflect on this initiative’s success, one thing is clear: providing access to technology is more than just distributing laptops—it’s about empowering students, fostering academic achievement, and leveling the playing field for those in need.
“For over 20 years, give IT. get IT. has been providing low- or no-cost computers and support to help low-income Mainers achieve their academic and career goals. But thanks to the partnership between Verizon and the Portland Regional Chamber, we were able to focus on supporting eligible students at one of Maine’s largest community colleges throughout an entire school year.
We’re hopeful that local business leaders will see the long-term value of this work and step up to help sustain it.
These students aren’t just earning degrees—they’re developing skills that will strengthen Southern Maine’s workforce. With the right support, they could become your next employees,” states Chris Martin at give IT. get IT.
