NBC10 Boston recently ran an investigative piece on how rising electronics prices are hitting families and students especially hard, driven largely by an ongoing global shortage of memory chips. The good news the story uncovered: buying refurbished is one of the smartest ways to fight back against those costs.

According to Janet Domenitz, executive director of the consumer advocacy group MASSPIRG, refurbished electronics are often 15–25% cheaper than buying new, with even deeper discounts available on older models. For shoppers willing to buy something a couple of years old and in good condition, savings can reach around 50%.
The story also pointed out that refurbished doesn’t mean compromised. Many refurbished products have barely been used at all — some are simply returns that were never even opened.
